Refinished Chest of Drawers

I love when people bring me a project that is different from my norm. I automatically look at a piece and start trying to figure out what technique would work best to antique it, especially when a piece has lots of intricate details. With this piece, the customer just wanted a fresh coat of paint on it to give it new life. She really wanted to use it as a pop of color in her home decor, bright pink!! I was excited because I loved the color but it was something that I would not be able to pull off in our home. Let's get to the process of the transformation!!

Supplies

* Painters tape

* Sandpaper

* Wood filler

*Wood glue (for repairing the drawers)

*Paint

*Minwax Spar Urethan

The top on the piece was marble so obviously I wasn’t going to touch it!! The body of the chest of drawers was in really good shape and it just needed a few dings and nicks filled with wood filler and a light sanding. I had to rebuild one drawer and give another a little TLC, but other than that, the piece was in great shape.  I started by lightly sanding down the drawers and then I wiped down the entire piece with mineral spirits. With the piece prepped and cleaned I taped off the mable top to protect it from the paint and got to work on the next step.

As I said before I love the color she picked!! BRIGHT PINK!! We matched the color from a swatch of fabric from a chair cushion that was going to sit next to the chest. It took 3 coats of paint to cover the piece evenly. I let it sit for a day in between each coat. I like to paint the inside of drawers on a project like this to just add a little extra uniqueness. I thought a blue from the same fabric swatch would be a great contrast to the piece. I put a clear coat over the entire piece for a little extra protection and it leaves the piece with a nice smooth finish too.

This was a simple makeover but it definitely made a huge difference!! Hope I've inspired you to turn something ordinary into a special piece but if you don't have the time to make your own, contact me for a custom piece and let me bring you that A Rustic Rose you've been looking for.
